“No. You have to add sugar, Dean. Not salt,” Sam corrected. He watched Dean move back and forth in Bobby’s kitchen. They were making cookies taking advantage of Bobby’s kitchen for a home cooked meal whenever John dumped them off at the junkyard. Even if it was junk food they were making it was at least something, that is if Dean would read the instructions rather than grabbing everything he could out of Bobby’s cabinets.

“I know, Sammy. I know,” grumbled Dean. He dumped everything into a bowl replacing the salt with sugar at Sam’s request. He poured it into the mix grabbing up a wooden spoon to stir, Dean read the recipe for instruction.

Sam grabbed a stepstool climbing up onto it to hover. He enjoyed spending this time with Dean. He learned new things just by watching. Even if it was something, simple like baking or ironing that knowledge came from Dean. Not their Mom, not their Dad or Bobby, Dean took care of them all. Save for Bobby he could take care of himself.

Dean watched Sam out the corner of his eye. He stirred the mix for ten minutes until the dough was ready. He moved over just a smidge to give Sam more room. He knew making the cookies was his little brother’s favorite part and let him go to town.

“Finally, we’re at the fun part,” Sam smiled brightly. He grabbed up a hand full of dough rolling it in between his hands then patted them down into its respective cookie shape.

“Yeah, but eating the result is more fun than baking it,” Dean corrected. Of course, he did all the hard stuff giving Sam easier task when it came to cooking.

Sam nodded. “That’s true,” he agreed grabbing up more dough to make even more cookies.

Dean smiled. Glad Sam agreed as he helped lay more cookies out on a cookie sheet. He already had the oven preheating, so it would be ready for them to put the cookies in soon as they finished making them.

Once they finished that, Dean grabbed up the tray. He opened the stove door sliding the tray inside. He set the timer then stood back to stretch. “In about twenty-five minutes or so we’ll have freshly baked cookies,” he said reaching out to ruffle Sam’s hair. “Then we gorge on them until we puke,” he grinned then moved to clean up his mess.

“Yeah, can’t wait. They smell so good,” Sam agreed. He liked the sound of Dean’s plan. Eat until you puke then are yelled at by Bobby who will make them clean up the mess.

When Dean finished cleaning, they passed the time playing cards. Sam talked Dean into playing Go Fish. They played until the timer went off telling it was time for dinner.

Dean got up off the floor taking the cookies out of the oven to cool. “Got to let them cool now,” he said watching Sam clean up the cards.

“Okay,” answered Sam. He put the cards away knowing better than to argue with Dean since he knew more about cooking then he did at eight years old. Sam could cook if he tried, but Dean was older and at twelve years old took care of himself more than anyone else his age that Sam knew.

When the cookies cooled, they gorged happily drinking them with milk then puked as promised just moments before Bobby got home.
